Glen Cove Makes List of Best Places for Young People

Competition considered 300 nominated communities.

Glen Cove has been chosen as one of the country's 100 best communities for young people, according to the Glen Cove Chamber of Commerce.

The list is the result of a competition created by America's Promise Alliance, an organization founded by Colin Powell and his wife with a mission of improving the state of America's youth.

Communities were nominated for being "dedicated to making youth a priority and ensuring that all youth have access to outstanding education and support services," according to the group's website.

A key factor in the designation is how committed a community is to reducing high school drop-out rates.

Glen Cove is the only community on Long Island chosen for the list, and is one of five from the state.

A celebration will be held on March 15 in the Robert M. Finley Middle School cafeteria in two sessions, one for grades five and under and the other for grades six through 12. The events will feature dancing and pizza.

Students are being asked to use art, literacy, music or multimedia to express why they think Glen Cove is a great place for young people.

Individuals and organizations are being asked to nominate deserving young people for a Youth Who Make a Difference Award, with winners being honored at the activities on March 15.

Phyillis Gorham, executive director of the Glen Cove Chamber of Commerce, said the chamber is accepting prize donations from local businesses to be awarded to winners.
