No Major Hurricane for Long Island This Weekend

Glen Cove can expect rain and strong winds Friday afternoon followed by a sunny Labor Day weekend.

Long Island will not be hit by a major hurricane this weekend, according to Joe Giannotti, a Long Island-based meteorologist.

"Earl has weakened to 115 mph, a minimal category 3 (major) hurricane. I will safely guarantee that the Northeast will not be hit with a major hurricane with Earl," Giannotti said at 5:00 p.m. Thursday night. "Good news on that front for my Long Island and Northeast friends. Earl will not be the next Long Island Express Hurricane."

While Saturday, Sunday and Monday are expected to be sunny, residents should still expect tropical storm conditions on Friday afternoon and evening with winds reaching 30-50 mph and 1-2 inches of rain, said Giannotti.

"The further east you are, the more active the conditions will get. The weather will clear out on Saturday morning for a beautiful Labor Day holiday weekend," he said.
