Shooting Raises Questions About Social Club

Does the activity at 248 Glen Street contribute to a problematic environment?

The shooting Thursday of a 25-year-old man at a private club near the corner of Glen Street and Hendrick Avenue had the nature of the establishment.

Others defended it - "nothing ever happens at the social club," commented one reader.

Police said between the victim and the shooter at the club, where the shooter left before returning to commit the act.

Does the club's operation give any cause for worry? Does it present any potential threats? Vote in our poll, and share your thoughts in the comments section.

Everyone in glen cove has a big mouth and no one knows exactly what happened the owner is a friend of the family he is a great guy I have been there plenty of times and so have my kids there was nothing illegal going on in the joint you might have had a a couple of dummies that caused the problem it was not the bars fault so unless everyone has proof of what there stating I don't think anyone should point any fingers the place was a hang out it was great nothing illegal happening in the joint I can vouch for that it was a misfortune so if someone gets accidental shot at someones house I guess it would be the homeowners fault think about no drugs or drinks where bieng served besides espresso and cappuccinos !!

Thanks for the comments. We'll speak to the folks at the social club this week and get their perspective.

The town has plenty of illegal activity establishments ( like gambling). If you go after this club, you gotta go after all of them.....(if you live in Glen Cove, you know the places)
anar July 16, 2012 at 10:56 pm
Debra if that's the case then why do you inhabit our city? I personally take offense to this comment because that first sentence is ignorant, and that is putting it nicely. I'm restraining myself for the sake of this being an internet forum and being the bigger person, but that is simply a wrong and ill-advised statement.
gianna July 16, 2012 at 11:19 pm
all you people are stuck on this illegal gambling thing, Do any of you play lotto? its the same thing, you are gambling, what makes it any different. I'm sure none of you are angels. This whole topic is a pointless subject.
Debra Caruso Marrone July 17, 2012 at 12:26 am
You're kidding, right? If you call that a nice section of town, then you must like loitering, public drinking, illegal housing, litter, and now a shooting. Ignorance is putting your head in the sand. Speaking up is for those who care And those who say it's none of our business must believe in taxation without representation. We pay property taxes to pay for policing and code enforcement, activies that are obviously sub par.
Pete July 17, 2012 at 01:20 am
Trying to justify criminal activity with illogical reasoning shows how low this town has become....With that type of mentality, we should bring back the strip bars that had "extracurricular services" and the infamous massage parlours that gave customers "special" services because sex is a natural social behavior.....

There is a clear undertone of racism in a few comments that I expect is common when an influx of immigrants floods an area. This however, is a town of immigrants and it's beauty is the seamless integration in some areas as well as the retention of multi-cultures. If we are concerned with loitering then surely we must also be concerned about the many cash businesses that act as if they are tax exempt. Let's hope that this was a very isolated incident, that the club in fact does nothing illegal in this community and that there are no further acts of violence. I lived in Locust Valley for years and truly felt that if I saw one more pink and green golf skirt that I would vomit. Glen Cove is a real town with real problems that does not simply need a cleaning.

Debra you seem to be an expert on law enforcement. Do you read the weekly arrests? There are usually quite a few and some fit into the category of quality of life issues. Police not only make arrests but also answer many calls, many of which are not worthy of a call to 911 thus wasting police services. Glen Cove is a very safe city and the police do a very good job. I sometimes wish NCPD would take over so I could hear people crying for Gcpd back.

Well, here ya go. Here is some inside info for you. One of my friends said he's been to this "private social club" before and played poker down there with both guys involved in the crime. He told me the shooter is from Brooklyn, and that many times when he's played people will have guns out on the card table......
Pazzo July 17, 2012 at 01:14 pm
It sounds like a lovely little social club. And look at the wonderful element it attracts!
Pete July 17, 2012 at 05:55 pm

GC Resident: There were three men involved, the man who started it is not mentioned. Wendsday the shooter got into a big fist fight with the man not mentioned {not a nice guy} While they were fighting Ledio got involved and punched the shooted in the head. The next night Thursday they were all down the club {they don't hand out there all the time} Ledio said something smart to the guy he punched in the head the night before , so the guy went home and got a gun and came back and shot Ledio and went looking for the other guy who started it all but he hid behind the cars then the shooter ran. It was all about three assholes having an argument and fight! None of whom are nice guys!!

Don't you love how the simple minded run the gamut with one issue and exploit the shooting for their own personal grievances about Glen Cove? There is no perfect crime-free city and it would be silly to think that small quality of life issues can be resolved by asking the Police Department to stalk people to determine whether they spit on the street or not. The diversity of the city will hinder everyone sharing what is considered socially and culturally acceptable because people come from different backgrounds and income levels. You can only learn their heritage to understand why they do the things that you consider unacceptable, then teach them what is considered appropriate for all. Now if you like to be a bitter Glen Cove citizen that likes to bellyache and do nothing about it, then live that way and know nothing will ever be changed....

Augie was arrested in relation to the shooting in Glen Cove. He parked in the back of the store to facilitate his getaway but had trouble exiting because of congestion due to road construction. Five minutes after the shooting, he was sitting in his car, having moved only a few feet, and club members pointed him out to police. Thats what I heard anyways....
Concerned Citizen July 17, 2012 at 10:31 pm
Glen Cove is getting worse & worse over the last few years and very little is being done to clean it up. All that were involved need to be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent. This city was once very beautiful and now is becoming very seedy.

I have my niece's sweet 16 coming up in September-does anyone know if the club is available on September 15th?
Pazzo July 18, 2012 at 04:22 pm
Sorry, but most people don't pack heat to go buy a lotto ticket.
John July 18, 2012 at 05:11 pm
Pazzo - "Sorry, but most people don't pack heat to go buy a lotto ticket." They should just in case someone else with evil intentions does. Oh, never mind we live in a County and State where we are not allowed to defend ourselves as the police is just few minutes away when seconds count. But they will get there just in time to cordon off your body and take down a report.....and I do not want to hear the tired old "We do not live in Dodge City". Guns carried by lawful abiding citizens prevent crimes check out any unaltered statistics....in our case only criminals carry guns and are ever more brazen to use them. But I digress as this argument does not go with this incident or does it?
Pazzo July 18, 2012 at 10:28 pm
John, I was responding to the assertion that illegal gambling is the same as buying a lottery ticket, which I think is a bullpoop comparison.
Sophia July 20, 2012 at 03:11 pm

Sophia July 20, 2012 at 03:12 pm

It's wonderful how the commentators on this forum really have nothing better to do with their lives other than gossip and complain about things that only partially exist.
Levittown resident July 23, 2012 at 09:41 pm
So if it started with those three you mentioned then why is Augie the one paying the price?
Levittown resident July 23, 2012 at 09:48 pm
Well since its only what you have heard then maybe since its not indeed a credible fact you shouldn't put it out there.. Slander is serious especially when it can in fact damage a person. This man is in enough trouble with out every Tom, dick and Harry adding comments about hearing information through the grapevine.. We Rent in grade school playing telephone this is someones life you are playing with and since your not the judge or jury save your testimony.
