Video: Glen Cove Seniors Escape Heat

Residents escape to community cooling center at the Glen Cove Senior Center.

Seniors escaped the heat in Glen Cove on Thursday as temperatures soared to the mid-90s.

Residents took shelter at the , which is considered the cooling center for the community – especially for seniors – said Lucy Van Horn, the center's activities coordinator.

"It's important that they know we have a cooling center here, because it is really hot," Van Horn said.

Both the center and center-owned buses are air-conditioned, said site manager Joanne Senecal.

"We encourage people to come in and get out of the heat," Senecal said. "We’ve also purchased extra fans for people who don’t have them or can’t afford them.”

The Senior Center has coordinated weather-appropriate events for the upcoming weeks, including an ice cream social scheduled for Monday afternoon.
