BOE Begins Absentee Ballot Count in Glen Cove Election

Ballots would determine victors in tight race for mayor, city council.

The Nassau County Board of Elections received over 335 absentee ballots Tuesday that will determine victors in Glen Cove's mayoral and city council elections, according to a Newsday report. Counting began at 11 a.m. Counting began at 11 a.m.

Both parties will have a chance to go to court after the counting is finished. Fifty one affidavit ballots and thirty one emergency ballots are also expected to be counted. Two military votes have arrived so far but others may be received before the Nov. 18 deadline.

A slim 115 vote difference brought Republican Reginald Spinello to apparent victory against incumbent Democrat Ralph Suozzi in Nov. 5 elections. The votes may swing the election in either party's favor.

In a post on his election campaign Facebook Page, Spinello wrote that he is proud to be the unofficial winner of the Mayorship and looks forward to the challenges ahead.

Mayor Ralph Suozzi has not conceded the election and did not respond to a request for comment, although he told Newsday last week that every vote counts in such a close election.

The absentee votes could also sway the winners of the city council election which is currently 50/50 with three Republicans and three Democrats. Incumbent Democrat Nicholas Dileo took the sixth seat with only 20 votes ahead of Republican candidate Kristina Heuser.
