Glen Cove Mayoral Election Remains Undecided

Absentee ballot count to start Tuesday, could take up to two weeks.

An absentee ballot count that will decide the Glen Cove mayoral election and city council composition will start Tuesday and could take up to two weeks, Nassau Board of Elections officials said Thursday.

A 115 vote difference brought Republican Reginald Spinello to apparent victory on Tuesday against incumbent Democrat Ralph Suozzi. Over 500 absentee ballots were requested in the election, according to Newsday, with 357 returned as of Tuesday.

In a post on his election campaign Facebook Page, Spinello wrote that he is proud to be the unofficial winner of the Mayorship and looks forward to the challenges ahead.

Mayor Ralph Suozzi has not conceded the election and did not respond to a request for comment, although he told Newsday that the election was very close and every vote counts.

The absentee votes could also sway the winners of the city council election which is currently 50/50 with three Republicans and three Democrats. Incumbent Democrat Nicholas Dileo took the sixth seat with only 20 votes ahead of Republican candidate Kristina Heuser.
