Flu Season Report
=Flu Season Report=
Due to the extreme cold spells and frequent winter storms, the Flu Season this year has been on the back burner and largely out of the spot light. Glen Cove EMS is seeing an expected increase in patients complaining of flu-like symptoms which is typical for this time of year.
Let’s take a look at where we are in the 2013/2014 NYS Flu Season. Statistics From The NYS Health Department As Of January 25th:
- Categorized state-wide as widespread.
- 11,752 laboratory confirmed cases
- 2,726 patients hospitalized
- 2,700 new cases reported this week, a 4% decrease
- 7% of hospital emergency room visits on Long Island were from flu-like symptoms
There is however some good news to report. It appears the Flu Season is reaching its peak. For the last 2 weeks the number of new cases reported has been slightly decreasing. The peak of the season is usually between mid January and mid February so this is right on schedule. The season typically ends in May.
The best way to prevent the spread of germs during Cold and Flu Season is frequent hand washing and covering your sneeze/cough.
