Hurricane Season Begins June 1st

The 2013 Atlantic Hurricane Season is less than a month away. The season officially begins June 1st and lasts until November 30th. Even though the peak of the season isn’t until September now is the time to start thinking about what you can do to prepare. Long Island was effected by tropical systems twice in the last two hurricane seasons. Tropical Storm Irene impacted us in August 2011 and Super Storm Sandy impacted us in October 2012. This years hurricane season is forecasted to be above-average. Predictions indicate there will be 18 named storms with 9 of those becoming Hurricanes and 4 becoming Major Hurricanes (Category 3 or higher).

As City of Glen Cove first responders are preparing for this years hurricane season there are things you could do to better prepare your family. If you haven’t already, sign-up for the Glen Cove Emergency Notification System. Glen Cove's Emergency Notification System is a computerized high-speed telephone calling system that enables the City of Glen Cove to quickly notify you and give out vital information in the event of an emergency. Keep in mind this system isn't just used for hurricanes, it's utilized during any emergency that occurs including heat waves, health emergencies, water emergencies, power outages, etc. As part of our continuing effort to update and enhance our Emergency Notification System, we are asking you to take a few moments of your time to provide us with your current contact information so the City can notify you and keep you informed. Please do not assume that your information is already in the system. It’s important to update your contact information when you change cell phone carriers, phone numbers or addresses.

Visit the Emergency Notification page on the City of Glen Cove website to electronically submit your contact information (http://www.GlenCove-LI.us) . You can also pick up a paper copy of the sign-up form at City Hall - 9 Glen Street.
