US Admiral presents "My Life as a Jew in the Military"
Rear Admiral Herman A. Shelanski Shares His Experiences as a Jewish Naval Officer
Memorial Day Weekend Sunday, May 29 at 10:15 a.m.
Recently, members of the Book Club at Congregation Tifereth Israel (CTI) in Glen Cove were enthralled to hear the experiences of congregant Jerry Wolkowitz as a young Jewish soldier in W.W. II. Wolkowitz shared these remembrances and his wartime memorabilia as part of the group’s reading of “G.I. Jew,” a recounting of how Jewish soldiers during the 1940s were transformed by their military experiences.
This Memorial Day Weekend, Rear Admiral Herman A. Shelanski, one of the highest-ranked officers in the U.S. Navy, brings the story forward for CTI members and guests. Admiral Shelanski, who commands eight ships, including the carrier, Harry. S. Truman, and has 6,500 troops serving under him, discusses how he has maintained his Jewish identity through such activities as dedicating a Holocaust Torah aboard one of his ships and participating in Israeli Independence Day.
My Life as a Jew in the Military is presented at CTI on Sunday, May 29 at 10:15 a.m. The program is free and open to the public; no reservations are needed. A light breakfast will be served.
CTI has provided Jewish programming and education to the Long Island community since 1897. CTI is located at 40 Hill Street, at the intersection with Landing Road. For further information about this or other programs at CTI, call (516) 676-5080 or log onto www.ctionline.org.
