Deasy Elementary School students recently headed back into the school’s vegetable garden to harvest the last of the summer crops and plant the next batch of veggies for the fall growing season. Youngsters were excited to find a plethora of hearty celery, cucumbers, eggplant, peppers and tomatoes, which Deasy parents nurtured throughout the summer.
Families and teachers took home the veggies to make eggplant parmigiana and other dishes to their liking. Students also used “bug catchers” to safely remove any little pests that may have made their way into the garden over the summer.
To the chant of “peas and carrots,” led by old friend and horticultural educator Farmer Brian, students planted celery, spinach, lettuce, broccoli and fennel, which they hope to harvest in late October. The fall harvest will serve as toppings for a healthy pizza salad, which the students will enjoy in school.

From the time the 16-by-32-foot garden was built approximately two years ago, it has served as an ongoing resource to teach young children about agriculture and sustainability while promoting healthy eating habits. This has been a constant theme at the school under the leadership of Principal Nomi Rosen.
