Good News: Going Bald, Donating Profits

Here are some of the inspiring stories of the week, where community members sought to help others, or made headlines for their achievements. 

Going Bald For A Cause

With the help and support of the surrounding community, the National Junior Honor Society at James Wilson Young Middle School in the Bayport-Blue Point School District collected recently $8,667 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, an organization set on finding cures for childhood cancer. The event was among the many St. Baldrick fundraisers taking place on Long Island.

Contributing to this year’s successful event in Bayport were the 65 individuals who volunteered to shave their locks, and the countless others who selflessly gave to the cause both at the event and through the NJHS’s online donation drive. 

Steven Carman, an author from Port Jefferson Station, and Matt Sinclair, the president and CEO of Elephant’s Bookshelf Press, have agreed to donate 100 percent of the proceeds from the sale of Carman’s upcoming debut novel "Battery Brothers" to the Sunshine Foundation.

A 501(c)(3) charity, the Sunshine Foundation’s sole purpose is to answer the dreams of chronically ill, seriously ill, physically challenged and abused children, ages three to 18, whose families cannot fulfill their requests due to the financial strain that child's illness may cause.

Harvard Club of Long Island Names Syosset Educator ‘Distinguished Teacher'

Allison Noonan, a teacher at Syosset High School and Northport resident, has been named a “Distinguished Teacher of 2014” by the Harvard Club of Long Island

“Our awards recognize teachers who spend unfathomable amounts of time and energy on our Long Island teens, year after year,” said Dr. Judith Esterquest, Harvard Club of Long Island Treasurer and Chair of the Distinguished Teacher Selection Committee, in a statement.

Noonan is one of 14 teachers from across Long Island to receive this award, Ms. Noonan will be honored at the Harvard Club of Long Island’s annual University Relations Luncheon on March 29.

MADD LI to Honor Police At Luncheon

Nassau and Suffolk police will be among those recognized at the seventh annual Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) luncheon on Thursday, March 27. The event will be held at Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury on March 27 from 12-4 p.m. In addition to Nassau and Suffolk police, law enforcement from New York Police Department and New York State Police.
