Park Rededicated to 'Big Ralph' Mastalio on Veterans Day

Glen Cove park pays tribute to WWI and II veteran.

On Veteran’s Day, Glen Cove public officials, Youth Bureau staff, members of the American Legion Young-Simmons Post 1765, Cub Scouts from Glen Cove Pack 6, Boy Scouts from Glen Cove Troop 6 and local residents helped rededicate Big Ralph Park in memory of veteran “Big Ralph” Mastalio.

“Big Ralph” Mastalio served in both World War I and World War II and received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his bravery. His commitment to his community was expressed in his service as a volunteer fireman with the Glen Cove Fire Department for 32 years.

Years ago, the monument dedicated in his memory by the Sons of Italy was removed, leaving no evidence of the park’s rich history.

The park got a face lift that included enlarging the Youth Bureau’s community garden, adding a greenhouse to the garden, a flag pole, benches and, most importantly, the rock with one of the original plaques dedicated to Ralph Mastalio which has now been returned to its rightful place in the park.

All this could not have happened without the help of Home Depot, the mayor’s office, Department of Public Works and Parks and Recreation.
