MLK Day: What's Open, What's Closed

Today is a national holiday; most public and financial institutions are closed in New York State.

Today, Monday, Jan. 20, 2014, is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a national holiday.

It commemorates the life of the famed Civil Rights leader who was gunned down by an assassin in Memphis in 1968. The third Monday of January has been a National Holiday since 1986 to observe Dr. King's birthday (which is actually Jan. 15) Here's what's opened and closed:

All State, Federal and local municipal offices are closed, but national, state and local parks are open.

U.S. Post offices are closed and there is no postal delivery.

There is no garbage pick-up Monday.  

The Long Island Railroad is operating on a holiday schedule with extra trains added to and from Penn Station. Off-peak fares will be in effect all day.

Public Schools are closed.

Banks, Stock market and other financial institutions: Closed.

Retail stores: Virtually all retail stores are open for their normal hours, including grocery stores and drug stores.

MLK Day is observed by many as a day for volunteering and honoring basic human rights of all people.
