Bards Initiative Reading at Page One a Success, Reminder About Contest

A review of the first Bards Reading From Page One, plus a reminder about the ongoing poetry contest.

For those who came on Wednesday night, they'd know that our night full of features was not to be missed!

First, yours truly took the stage, with a variety of poetry on everything from the sacred to the profane. Next, Vicki Iorio gave us all an impressive show with her works that perfectly skated the edge of filthy and pristine, actually forcing us to wonder at times whether we should feel dirty for loving it so much or just keep applauding (in the best way possible). After that, James Wagner (who buys a second airline ticket under the name Ishwa, though don't tell him I said that!) kept us roaring with works like "To My Former Lover," "The Temple of Manhood," and "Yuppiemobile," along with a few more serious works here and there. Then, J R Turek gave us a bit of a preview from her upcoming book, "100 Ways to Kill Your Coworkers (and Get Away With it!)," and she sure didn't disappoint! Finishing off our five-feature line-up, Peter Dugan read some works from his book "Members Only," along with other unpublished writings, with an eloquence that would leave spoken-word poets envious.

Our open reading included Long Island poets Gail Goldstein, Margarette Wahl, and our next upcoming feature Antonio Bellia (also known as Madly Loved), with Chef Jeanine DiMenna ending the reading with a poem of her own, and roaring applause.

While I certainly hope you'll come to our next reading on Wednesday, May 25 at 7:30 p.m., Bards Reading From Page One is hardly the only opportunity you have for poetry! Every month, I'll be running a poetry contest right here on Glen Cove Patch. This time around, there's no theme, no requirements, no limits (as long as it's clean enough for me to publish).

Send me up to two of your best poems to marc.rosen88@gmail.com by midnight on Saturday, May 28. The winners will be announced by June 1, or when I determine them, whichever comes first.
