Scholarship Set Up to Honor Carol Ann Sucharski

Glen Cove resident was active in PTA, Family Services.

It is with deep regret and sadness that the family of Carol Ann Sucharski, (nee Sukman) conveys her passing on Dec. 31, 2011 in Port St. Lucie, Fla., due to complications from surgery.

In death, she is mourned by a loving family, cherished friends and an entire community.  In life, she encompassed all that is good in humanity, unconditionally giving of herself, working tirelessly for the good of youth and assisting the underprivileged in Glen Cove.

Carol Sucharski was born in Chicago and moved with her parents to Glen Cove shortly after birth.  After completing schooling in Maine, Carol returned to Glen Cove and began a family with her late husband John S. Sucharski.

A nearly lifelong resident of Glen Cove, Carol’s generous caring nature and love for her hometown led her into a life of service to the people of Glen Cove.  Due to her inspired advocacy, Carol’s name quickly became synonymous with youth services in the city.

Early in life, she became an active member of the Glen Cove Parent Teacher Association and continued on to serve for 18 years on the Glen Cove Board of Education assisting with the development of the Community Scholarship Fund and the Glen Cove Booster Club.  In addition, Carol worked for the Glen Cove Youth Bureau, ultimately becoming the Family Services director.

It is in this capacity that Carol touched numerous lives as an outspoken advocate for those with no voice.  Carol could often be seen and heard fighting for emergency funds for families in need, many times donating her own money to assist the less fortunate.  Carol’s dedication and generosity translated to her personal life as well where she was an active member of the Glen Cove Kiwanis.  She is remembered as an active member and friend, receiving several honors during her time as a member.

Carol is survived by her mother Naomi Sukman, son David, daughter Marie, daughter-in-law Solange, and grandchildren Paige, Tomas (T.J.) and Gavin.

She reunites with her late husband John Sucharski, sister Marsha Sukman and father Charles Sukman.

Carol’s passing was mourned in a private family service.  In a fitting tribute to her memory, the family has established a memorial scholarship and requests that donations be made to the fund.  Donations can be made in Carol’s name to: The Glen Cove Community Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 453, Glen Cove 11542.
