Former Mayor Joseph M. Reilly, 85, Dies

The Glen Cove High School graduate headed the city's government from 1962 to 1966 and served as a state assemblyman for 16 years.

Former Glen Cove mayor John M. Reilly died Sunday at his home in Glen Cove, according to Newsday.

He was 85.

Reilly was a graduate of Glen Cove High School and lived in Glen Cove throughout his life. 

He served as the city's commissioner of accounts from 1955 to 1961 before serving one term as its mayor, from 1962 to 1966. He was elected to the state Assembly in 1966, where he remained for 16 years.

Reilly left the Assembly to become Nassau County's general service commissioner in 1982, a position he held until he retired 10 years later. 

He stayed on as chairman of Glen Cove's Republican party until 2003.

A funeral Mass will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church.
