Prolific Writer Walter H. Stern Dies at 88

Long-time Glen Cove resident wrote six books, worked for the City.

Walter H. Stern, a former resident of Glen Cove and active participant in its civic life, died Saturday at the age of 88. 

Stern served as Commissioner of Assessment and Taxation for the city, served as president of the Boys Club, and was involved with the Lincoln House, according to The Roslyn News. Stern was also campaign chairman for the congressional candidacy of William Casey who later served as CIA director under Ronald Reagan. 

Stern was born in Frankfurt, Germany in 1924 and most recently resided in Roslyn Harbor and Boca Raton. He was a former reporter and assistant real estate editor for The New York Times, public relations executive for Mobil Oil and numerous firms, and the author of six books.

Stern was married to his wife, Donata, for 62 years. He is the father of Roger (Gail) and Claudia (Ed), grandfather of Jeremy and Hillary Gemma.

A service was held for Stern at the North Country Reform Temple in Glen Cove on Monday. He was buried in Locust Valley Cemetery.
