Community Corner

Local boy collecting used cell phones to help American soldiers deployed overseas stay in touch with their families

My son Andrew (a student at Finley Middle School) and I (his mom) are working on a charity project to help American military who are deployed overseas to stay in touch with their families back home. We are working together with the non-profit charity Cell Phones for Soldiers to collect used cell phones that can either be reused or recycled to provide communications funds. We are doing as part of a Community Service Project and our goal is to collect over 100 cell phones.

Recently used and working cell phones will be redistributed for use by our soldier. Older or non-working cell phones will be recycled and the money from them will be used to purchase communication time or calling cards.

Currently, we have a collection drop off location in the lobby of North Country Reform Temple at 86 Crescent Beach Road in Glen Cove, NY. Shortly we will be adding more drop off locations. If you are not able to come to our drop off locations, you can mail in your used phones - just contact us through our Facebook page and request a label for free shipping.

Our collection is running now through Friday, June 13.
