A massive fireworks explosion in the Bronx Monday night sent shockwaves reaching roughly 10 miles across the Long Island Sound to Glen Cove.

The explosion occurred around 11:15 p.m., when, according to The New York Post, a garbage pail stuffed with professional grade fireworks detonated at Pelham Bay Park. Police say it's not clear why the fireworks were there or what set them off.

The Glen Cove Police Department received numerous phone calls from residents following the blast, according to a notice posted on the Glen Cove EMS Facebook page. At least one resident said their house shook.

Did you hear or feel the explosion Monday night? What was your reaction?

I live in Glen Cove, the explosion shook my house enough so that I thought something had landed on my roof. I had to check each room for damage. This seemed to be more powerful than any fireworks explosion.

We went out to look at our roof as well! We thought it might be an asteroid hitting or plane refuse..or a sonic boom or shock wave. It was so hard hitting I was leaving against the back wall and it really hit me hard and did shake the whole house. We also called the police.

I felt and heard it. The house shook and I felt it right through my bones. My wife ran outside to see if anything could be seen thinking it was a plane crash. No neighbors were outside so I assume they didn't hear anything. This sounded like a bomb.

I'm in Bayville. I felt then heard the muffled blast a second later in my second floor bedroom. Made a note of the time-10:58 PM- as I suspected some kind of distant explosion. Was surprised not to hear anything on news. Good scoop GC Patch.

We heard it and felt it here as well. Called my son because he works for the gc auxiliary and he was working. My husband went outside to check the house. He thought maybe a car drive through a house. Kept me up the rest of the night. It defenatly happened more like 11 not 11:15. Something doesn't make sense. There is no news footage of th area it happened in. Very scary. How can that happen in the Bronx and we not only hear it in glen cove but feel it as well.

I was watching TV when I heard the blast my dog jumped off the couch....sounded like a bomb went off! My living room shook & I ran down stairs to where my son was playing xbox with his friends! I called the Glen Cove Police dept & they said the explosion came off the sound & that all was ok in Glen Cove. It didn't make sense what the police officer said because the explosion sounded so close and my front door shook!

I was in the kitchen watching TV and heard the boom and the windows shake. Thought a neighborhood transformer blew. New it was something big. Just glad no one got hurt.

Heard it and felt it, thought it as a earthquake. I am not sure why there has been no news coverage on this , seems very odd.

I saw references to news coverage for this on Facebook.
