Update: 6 Taken to Hospital in School Bus Collision

Car, bus crash at West 11th Street Intersection in Huntington Station.

Six people, including four children, were taken to the hospital Wednesday afternoon when a sedan and a school bus collided on West 11th Street in Huntington Station.

Suffolk County police said Rita Canales, 23, was driving a 2008 Nissan sedan west on West 11th Street in Huntington Station when, according to witnesses, she failed to yield at a stop sign and struck a school bus that was already in the  intersection.  The bus, which was traveling north on Fourth Avenue, was carrying four children from the Developmental Disabilities Institute on Little Plains Road, Huntington.

All four children on board, approximately 3 and 4 years old, were taken to Huntington Hospital for observation.  A woman on the bus was transported to Huntington Hospital for  non-life-threatening injuries.  The male bus driver was not injured.

Canales was taken to Huntington Hospital where she was treated for minor neck injuries.  There were no passengers in her car.  Canales was issued six summonses including unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, uninsured motor vehicle, failure to stop for a stop sign, failure to yield the right of way at an intersection, avoiding an intersection or traffic-control device and failure to produce a license.

After the collision, the sedan spun into a utility pole at the intersection.

Suffolk County Police, along with emergency personnel from Huntington, Greenlawn and Melville, responded to the accident.

Huntington Patch will update this story as new information comes in.

Deport her. Locking her up costs the taxpayers too much.

Deport this girl. I live around here and this is way too common with these unlicensed illegals running a muck.

IF THIS PERSON WHO CAUSED THE ACCIDENT IS HERE ILLEGALLY, THE WORD IS IF. YOU NEVER KNOW IF THIS PERSON IS HERE LEGALLY. Nothing will happen to this person and I am sure will never see the inside of a jail. This is what YOU VOTED FOR. You as a AMERICAN VOTED YOURSELF to a SECOND CLASS. YOU got what YOU voted for.
