Update: One Dead in Bus Collision

Bus driver killed in head-on crash Monday along Oyster Bay Road in Locust Valley.

One person is dead and four injured after a head-on crash between a cement truck and mini school bus carrying children Monday afternoon along Oyster Bay Road in Locust Valley, Nassau Police said.

Old Brookville and Nassau Police responded to a collision under the Long Island Rail Road bridge spanning Oyster Bay Road and found a cement truck had plowed into the front of the school bus.

The bus was reportedly coming from a nearby day camp. One frantic parent was seen rushing to the scene.

Police confirmed the male bus driver was killed in the collision. Injured are four children and an adult chaperone on the bus, as well as the driver of the cement truck.

Spokeswoman Shelley Lotenberg said  received three children, ages 6 to 9, who were evaluated and released.

The bus is from the Locust Valley Central School District.

According to sources at the scene, the concrete mixing tanker struck the bridge as it was passing through and lost control. The truck is reportedly owned by Nicolia Ready Mix.

Glen Cove EMS said it was dispatched at 3:28 p.m. to assist the Locust Valley Fire Department.

LIRR service was suspended between Oyster Bay and Locust Valley branches for up to four hours as a result of the accident, according to the MTA. The 7:30 p.m. train from Penn Station to Oyster Bay marked resumption of service.

This is a developing story. Patch will update as more information becomes available.

How stupid to drive a cement truck under a bridge that says 10' 1 . Why hasn't that bridge been upgraded or the road have no trucks permitted if they can't pass a certain point.

I would like to show these file photos of the Oyster Bay Rd. Railroad Bridge, taken shortly after the yellow and black safety stripes were painted:
http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q119/hotbike/IMG_0072.jpg http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q119/hotbike/IMG_0073.jpg You can see that the Bridge is at an angle to the road, which is why the cement truck went sideways into the oncoming lane. The height of the bridge is marked as ten feet, one inch.

Terrible accident that could have been avoided. Why? Because the driver of the cement truck was not paying ATTENTION to what was posted. 10'1" trestle height.
Obviously he/she did not realize the height of the vehicle that he/she was driving. Do you pay attention to road signs ? I doubt it Do you come to a stop at a stop sign? Do you speed? I doubt it Speeding in parking lots? yes you do Do you signal? Do you tail gate? Do you cross the double line in your SUV's that are going too fast? Do you see what happens in an instant? You are here and then you are not. Be responsible You are not the ONLY person in this world that someone loves Kindest regards to everyone dpr

Median? That's West Shore Road on the north side of that railroad bridge. There's barely room for two cars to fit in their respective lanes. It's actually remarkable that we don't see cars in the water up there -- it wouldn't take much more than a swerve.

Okay, my mistake. I was told this was the West Shore underpass, but now I see the Matinecock sign, so... not quite.
But I don't recall any medians up at this underpass, either. :-/
