Crime Nearby: 18-Year-Old Charged in Girl's Strangling

Notable arrests and convictions on Long Island.

Maxwell Sherman, the 18-year-old Long Beach man charged with strangling and killing a teen girl, told a news reporter the day before his arrest that he was “amazed” and “surprised” by her death.

Police arrested Sherman on Saturday after Lauren Daverin, 18, of Lynbrook was found dead — beaten and stripped naked except for her boots, with her clothes nearby — on a footbridge in Rockville Centre on Thursday night, and charged him with second-degree murder, according to The Daily Mail.

On Friday, Sherman told a CBS news reporter near the crime scene that he had seen Daverin on the night she died “for like five minutes,” he said, adding that it was around 7 p.m. and he was riding by on his bike where a group of teens had gathered and he grubbed a cigarette from his friend, Steve.

Nilson Lagos Rivera, 19, was at his home on 3rd Street early Saturday when he became involved in a heated verbal argument with his friend over a bicycle pad lock key, Nassau Police said.

The two men locked their bicycles together on a nearby street earlier in the evening, and the defendant wanted the key from the 28-year-old victim.

Before the victim could respond, the defendant picked up a kitchen knife from the counter and began slashing the victim with it. Rivera took the victim’s keys and ran off, police said.

The victim was treated and released from a local hospital, according to police.

Police arrested Rivera later Saturday and charged him with first-degree robbery.
