Crime Nearby: Teacher's Aide Gets Inappropriate

A teacher's aide at the Henry Viscardi School in Albertson wascharged with having an inappropriate relationship with a disabled student, Nassau County Police said.   

Ivone Oliviera, 34, of Levittown, was arrested Thursday and charged with endangering the welfare of a disabled person. The school confirmed she is no longer an employee.         

Police claim Oliviera, while working at the school for students with various physical disabilities in January 2013, displayed inappropriate physical contact with one of the students, hugging and kissing him.   

An investigation discovered the she had also sent the student text messages and photos from her phone which were sexual in manner.   

Hofstra Student Killed in Robbery
A home invasion turned tragic early Friday when a Hofstra University student was accidently shot and killed by a Nassau County police officer in her apartment near the college campus.   

Andrea Rebello, 21, a junior from Tarrytown, was killed by an officer who responded to reports of a robbery at her home.   

Police also killed Dalton Smith, 30, a parolee from Hempstead who held three female victims and one male victim hostage. Police said that Smith took aim at officers, who opened fire. The veteran officer reportedly fired eight rounds.  

Make That 54 Arrests 
A man who had been arrested 53 times since 1990 led police officers on a car chase Friday night that ended with him and another driver going to the hospital, according to Southampton Village police.   

Det. Sgt. Herman Lamison said patrol officers were on a drug stakeout in the Hillcrest Avenue area around 9 p.m. when they tried to pull over Joseph L. Coffey, 51, of Southampton, who was driving a 1991 BMW.   

Coffey fled and officers chased his vehicle. He tried to pass an SUV, but sent it into privet hedges before Coffey spun out of control into a tree, according to Lamison.   

Coffey was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third degree and in the fifth degree, both felonies. He also faces a number of misdemeanor charges and was issued 11 traffic tickets.  

Hypodermic Needle As Weapon 
A Great Neck man was arrested in Brooklyn Sunday for a robbery that saw a hypodermic needle used as weapon, according to Nassau Police.   

Bjorn Brodsky, 28, drove to a residence on Maxwell Avenue in Oyster Bay on March 28 and asked a 19-year-old male victim if he could talk to him, police said. The victim, who knew Brodsky, entered car with the defendant and two unknown men.  

Brodsky then threatened the victim with a hypodermic needle and demanded he empty his pockets, according to police. The victim surrendered his wallet containing only personal papers and was then pushed out of the parked vehicle, police said.   

Brodsky has been charged with first-degree robbery.    

Guilty Plea in Dragging DWI 
A Long Beach man pleaded guilty to the top charge against him after he drove drunk, hit a 15-year-old girl crossing the street, and dragged her for 600 feet, according to Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice.   

German Gutierrez, 50, pleaded guilty Thursday to the top chargeof first-degree assault, depraved indifference, aggravated driving while intoxicated, and leaving the scene of an accident with serious physical injury in exchange for a promised sentence of eight years in prison from Judge Tammy Robbins.   

The DA’s Office recommended a sentence of 10 years.
