Crimes Nearby: Another Involved in SAT/ACT Scandal

Patch reports on crimes from nearby communities.

The following arrest information was supplied by the Nassau and Suffolk County Police Departments. It does not indicate a conviction.

Great Neck

Another North Shore student has turned himself in to the Nassau County disctrict attorney's office in the that first rocked Great Neck earlier this fall.

On Tuesday, Nov. 22, it was revealed that nine additional students paid between $500 to $3,600 to four test takers from 2008 through 2011 to take the SAT or ACT, resulting in higher scores for the students, according to Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice.

Authorities say Michael Pomerantz, 18, of Great Neck, was arraigned on Monday afternoon. He is charged with first-degree scheme to defraud, second degree falsifying business records, and second degree criminal impersonation.

While three of the accused turned themselves in to the D.A.’s office on Nov. 22, Pomerantz waited until Monday because of a medical condition.

Garden City

1. Police arrested a 35-year-old female from Elmont for stealing three designer sweaters and one designer dress at Lord & Taylor. Total theft was $852.

2. Detectives are investigating a report where an unknown person opened a fraudulent cell phone account in the name of a resident.

3. Police conducted a commercial vehicle inspection on Clinton Road where 14 vehicles were inspected, four were placed out of service, 64 tickets were issued for traffic and safety violations, including four for overweight violations.

4. A 23-year old student from Commack was arrested on Nov. 16 for harassment for an incident that occurred on Nov. 7 where he reportedly pushed another student against a wall during a class.

Farmingdale

Suffolk County Police are investigating a series of recent graveside vase thefts at

The Nassau County Criminal Defense Attorneys report that 38 bronze vases have been stolen from St. Charles in recent months, but only nine of the thefts were officially reported to the Suffolk Police Department. Another 150 vases made of the valuable metal have also been stolen from nearby .

Malverne-West Hempstead

Nassau County Police are still searching for the man who on Hempstead Turnpike in West Hempstead on Nov. 14.

According to police, just eight days later on Nov. 22, the same man robbed the Roslyn Savings Bank on S. Main Street in Freeport.
