Crimes Nearby: Child Porn, Wallet Theft

Patch reports on crimes across the region, Feb.7

Some of the crimes reported around Long Island this week.

Mineola

A Mineola man was sentenced to 7 years in federal prison Friday on charges of trading child pornography over the internet.

Michael Hopkins, 25, pleaded guilty to the charges in U.S. District Court in Central Islip and still faces charges of allegedly raping a 14-year-old Suffolk girl he met on the internet. While Hopkins allegedly did not coerce the girl to have sex with him, she is legally under the age of consent of 15. Hopkins has pleaded not guilty.

Prosecutors said that Hopkins had been trading the images online for the past 8 years.

According to authorities, Hopkins was originally arrested in 2010 on the pornography charges which led to the discovery of the alleged rape by both FBI and Suffolk police.


Port Washington

A Port Washington man was accused Wednesday of knowingly depositing invalid checks and then withdrawing the proceeds.  

New York State Police say Antonio Raimo, 42, of Port Washington opened a bank account with in Port Washington. After opening the new account, Raimo deposited two checks totaling $5,800, police say. Soon after, Raimo made withdrawals for all of the funds, according to police. Both checks later came back cancelled due to insufficient funds, authorities said. 

Raimo is charged with third-degree grand larceny and is scheduled to be arraigned in Nassau County First District Court in Hempstead on Wednesday.


Plainview

A Plainview man faces robbery charges after police say he attempted to steal a woman's wallet at , Nassau Police said.

Detectives from the Third Squad said the incident took place Wednesday afternoon when Evan H. Artz, 25,  approached a female student, 22, from behind. He reached into her pocketbook and removed her wallet, police said.

The victim realized what was happening and screamed, alerting other students. A struggle ensued with Artz. The defendant attempted to flee with the wallet but was tackled by a witness, said.

Artz managed to get free and run from the scene but left the wallet behind, which was returned to the victim. No injuries have been reported at this time, police said.

On Thursday, Artz was located and charged with robbery.

Huntington Station

A Huntington Station man died after being shot in the head at a local deli Saturday.

Michael Fredericks, 26, died at Huntington Hospital after the shooting at Los Campos Deli, located at 161 Depot Rd. in Huntington Station at about 10:18 p.m., according to police.

Before police arrived at the scene, the victim was transported to the hospital were he was pronounced dead.

No arrests have been made in connection with the incident, according to police.
