Crimes and arrests reported in nearby communities.

The following arrest was supplied by several local police departments. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate convictions.

Port Washington: The Crime Stoppers are asking the public’s help to identify and locate two males wanted for at least four grand larcenies.

Between June 20, 2011 and July 30, 2011, two men – one wearing an olive-colored shirt with vertical stripes, khaki shorts and a tan bowler-style hat, the other wearing a yellow reflective vest, light-colored baseball cap and dark shorts – were last seen around the Soundview Marketplace and Delco shopping area, which houses Stop & Shop, in Port Washington. They are wanted in connection with stealing pocketbooks and wallets from shopping carts when shoppers are distracted, according to police.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Alberti of the Port Washington Police, at 516-883-0500, extension 330. All calls will remain anonymous.

A West Babylon man spotted per hour by Exit 36, the Searingtown Road – Port Washington exit, on the Long Island Expressway was arrested Thursday, police say.

The man, Nigel Recass of 412 Herzel Boulevard, tried to prevent drivers from passing him, frequently changing lanes without signaling and causing others to brake suddenly, according to the Nassau County Highway Patrol Bureau.

He also followed other motorists too closely, “almost striking them,” police said in a statement.

Police stopped Recass at Exit 39, the Glen Cove Road exit, where he was arrested.

He was charged with reckless driving, illegal speed contest, fivecounts of failing to signal lane change, five counts of following too closely, four counts of failing to stay in a single lane, driving in excess of 55 miles per hour, inadequate muffler and obstructed registration plates.

Recass is scheduled to appear in First District Court in Hempstead on Aug. 19.

New Hyde Park: A swastika, among other things, was  of the  on July 24 at around 8:30 p.m., according to a report from the . In addition to drawing the swastika, the person's initials were drawn in the sidewalk and roof tar was spread over a set of metal doors and windows.

A man who had recently been fired from Air-Now at 190 Atlantic Avenue  while trying to pick up his paycheck on August 4 at about 6:15 p.m., according to a report from the .

Garden City: On Aug.2, officers responded to Nassau County Parking Field #14 on the south side of the Supreme Court for a report of a suspicious brief case that was left unattended in the middle of the field. Safeguard procedures were put in place and upon an investigation it was determined that all was in order; the brief case belonged to a lawyer and it was accidentally left behind.

Woodbury: The Nassau County Second Squad reported the arrest of a Jericho man for possession of a forged instrument made on Aug.2  in Woodbury. According to detectives, on May 22, Melvin Pagan, 30, of 220 Dawson Lane, entered the Walgreens located at 406 S. Oyster Bay Road and attempted to pass a forged prescription for Vicoden. The pharmacist identified the prescription as fake and notified the police.

Wantagh: Sometime between July 22 and July 25, unknown suspect(s) spraying shaving cream on a 1993 Ford at the Woodmont Sports Complex in Wantagh. The shaving cream was also sprayed inside the gas tank, causing the vehicle's engine to seize.

Seaford: Two men were arrested after a robbery at a Seaford gas station, according to the Nassau County Police Department.

Benjamin Sheppard, 19, of Central Islip, walked into the on Hicksville Road in Seaford around 12:05 a.m. and pointed a silver handgun at a male clerk working in the store, demanding cash from the register, police said. Sheppard also took money from the lottery machine, as well as cigarettes and cigars. Police said that Sheppard then exited the gas station into a grey Nissan with driver Kevin Knight, 33, of Atlanta, Ga. The two fled the scene together. They were subsequently stopped and arrested, police said. The Robbery Squad concluded, after further investigation, that Sheppard and Knight were both involved in the robbery of a Mobil Gas Station in Plainview, which occurred on July 20 around 12:50 p.m.
