Crimes Nearby: Homicide, DWI, Break-Ins; Burglary

Lakeview

A teen from Syosset is being charged with five counts of burglary for several break-ins in Lakeview, Nassau Police said.

James Wells-Jones of Syosset was arrested Thursday after being confronted outside a home from which an iPod and television had been stolen, police said.

After forcing open a side bathroom window on Orlando Avenue in Lakeview, police allege Wells-Jones - along with three accomplices who have not yet been arrested - took the TV and iPod. After being confronted by the witness, Wells-Jones and the other three subjects dropped the TV and ran.

Police located and apprehended Wells-Jones, who still had the iPod in his pocket.

Wells-Jones' is suspected of involvement in four other burglaries in Lakeview since late September.

He is being charged with five counts of second-degree burglary.

Garden City

1. On Oct. 29, a resident on Maple Street discovered that a snow blower valued at $500 was removed from his unlocked garage.

As a result of an investigation conducted by Garden City detectives, a male 42-year-old from Hempstead was arrested at his residence for larceny. The detectives also recovered the stolen snow blower after determining it was being kept at another location in Hempstead.

2. Officers reported an accident where a vehicle had struck a light pole and found that both the driver, a 29-year-old Port Washington woman, and her passenger, a 26-year-old woman from Valley Stream, received minor cuts. Further investigation resulted in the arrest of the driver for aggravated DWI.

North Bellmore

Hasan Kaya was returning home from work late Sunday when he was gunned down just outside his North Bellmore apartment, police say.

According to the Homicide Squad, the incident occurred just before midnight outside of 925 East Meadow Ave.

Kaya, 49, sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the torso and legs and was transported to Nassau University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

"We do not believe that this was random," Nassau County Police Detective Lt. John Azzata told Patch.com.

Shell casings from a .380 caliber handgun were recovered at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing.
