Driver Flees Police, Leaves Drugs, ID Behind

Officers say suspect will be arrested and charged with cocaine possession.

Glen Cove police say they are searching for a man who fled from police on foot Monday after a traffic stop on Highland Road.

The suspect, police said, left cocaine and his driver's license in the car.

According to city detectives, around noon that day, the driver was pulled over for a traffic violation and began to act suspicious and evasive when an officer questioned him. Then, police said, the man exited his car and began raising his voice at one officer. The driver later ran away just before another officer searched his car.

"When a second officer arrived on the scene and attempted to look into the cabin of the man's vehicle, the man took off and fled on foot," explained Detective Tom Fitzpatrick, a spokesman for the department. "A search of the vehicle uncovered over a half ounce of crack cocaine and powder cocaine in the cabin."

Police then put out a canine search for the man in the area near Highland Road and Stuart Drive, but was unsuccessful, partially because of Monday's rainy weather.

Fitzpatrick said, however, that the department will use the suspect's license to track him down, make an arrest and charge him with drug possession.
