Freeport Man Charged with Leandra's Law in Roslyn

Incident took place on LIE near exit 39.

A Freeport man was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, also known as Leandra’s Law, for an incident that took place in Roslyn on Wednesday at 9:45 p.m. 

Nassau County police say that a 911 call from a 14-year-old girl who was a passenger in her father’s car revealed that she and her 12-year-old sister were on an unknown highway, and her father, who was driving, was possibly drunk.

After securing a description of the car, police spotted the vehicle stopped on the Long Island Expressway on the shoulder near exit 39, according to officers.

Once police ensured the safety of the children, police interviewed the driver, Ja Mail Lewis, 37, of 102 Harrison Ave., and determined that he was intoxicated and placed him under arrest.

Lewis is charged with two counts of aggravated driving while intoxicated (Leandra’s Law), driving while ability impaired combined influence, driving while ability impaired drugs, driving while intoxicated and an additional vehicle and traffic law violation.

He will be arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on Thursday.
