Glen Cove Water Rescue Saves 3 Teenage Girls

The current and waves took the pedal boat the girls were in much further into Long Island Sound than expected and the boat began to take on water, police said.

Three teenage girls were rescued Wednesday afternoon when their pedal boat began to take on water in the Long Island Sound, authorities said Friday.

Having launched their boat off of Pryibil Beach, the girls found that the current and waves took them much further into the Sound than they expected. At 5:20 p.m., one of the teens managed to use her cell phone to call Glen Cove Police and spoke with Sgt. Ryan Nardone, police said.

The sergeant calmed the frightened girl and kept her on the phone while he dispatched help to her location, police said.

Both Glen Cove fire department boat and Glen Cove Harbor Patrol were dispatched. The rescue boats located the girls about a mile north of Morgan’s Island, police said.

The girls were evacuated from their boat and loaded onto the Glen Cove fire boat, police said. The harbor patrol was then able to tow the girls boat back to Pryibil Beach.
