Judge: Ex-Yankee Rusty Torres Can Stand Trial on Child Sex Abuse Charges

Ex-Yankee Rosendo “Rusty” Torres is fit for trial, a Nassau County judge said Monday. 

The decision comes nearly two years after the one-time Oyster Bay town employee was accused of molesting an 8-year-old girl in Plainview on two occasions. 

Declaring the case “ready for trial,” Nassau County Judge Christopher Quinn told Torres, "This case is not going to be stopped because of your health,” adding “this is going to be your last adjournment," Newsday reported.

Torres was originally charged in connection with two separate incidents of sex abuse involving the 8-year-old girl that occurred in Plainview, once on April 30 and again on May 7, 2012, police said. He had pleaded not guilty. 

He retired as a Town of Oyster Bay baseball coach in June 2012.

Torres, who played parts of two seasons during the 1970s with the Yankees, told arresting officers he was "sorry" for the incidents and "stopped himself" before further damage was done to his victim, court documents revealed.

Since his arrest, Torres has retained four different attorneys, according to Newsday, and recently had spinal fusion surgery.
