Lobster Pot Sparks Water Rescue Mission

A witness mistook floating pot for a boat in distress offshore of Pryibil Beach on Monday night.

The Glen Cove Fire and Police departments, along with Harbor Patrol and a helicopter, responded to a water search for a boat in distress that turned out to be a lobster pot floating in the water on Monday night.

A police officer notified the Fire Department of a possible boat in distress at 7:45 p.m. after a passerby called and reported something floating in the water, 100 yards offshore of Pryibil Beach, said Chief of the GCFD Anthony Tripp.

The GCFD sent out both a rescue truck and boat and the Glen Cove Harbor Patrol was called to the scene.

The search went on for close to an hour before the GCFD terminated the search and determined that the alleged boat was only a lobster pot, said Tripp.
