Minor Arrested for Spate of Auto Break-Ins

Glen Cove teen charged with two stolen cars, theft of electronics from parked vehicles between October and December.

A 16-year-old male from Glen Cove was arrested Jan. 10 and charged in several incidents of theft involving parked vehicles in recent months, according to the Glen Cove Police Department.

The charges include two counts of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, one for a vehicle stolen on Oct. 30, 2012 on Glen Keith Rd. and another stolen on Dec. 23, 2012 on Valentine Ave.

Det. Lt. John Nagle explained that police filed those charges because they cannot prove that the teen stole the vehicles, only that he used them. Police returned both vehicles to their owners.

The teen also faces three counts of petit larceny for allegedly accessing vehicles parked on Glen Keith Rd. on Oct. 30, Nov. 30 and in early December and stealing "various electronic equipment," and of stealing electronics valued at $400 from a parked vehicle on Knott Dr. on Dec. 24.

Nagle said the accused would walk around, open unlocked car doors and steal the items.
