Nor'easter Leaves Hundreds Without Power

Authorities still working to fix storm's trail of troubles in Glen Cove.

The aftermath of last weekend's torrential downpour and gusty winds has still left hundreds of residents in Glen Cove without power.

As of 3:25 p.m. Monday, the Long Island Power Authority reported that there are still 370 residents who have reported a power outage in their home or neighborhood. LIPA serves 11,417 customers in the city.

LIPA officials said they expect power to be restored to most residents by Wednesday evening, but it could take even longer for people who are still calling in new outages.

"Broken branches are hanging on wires and those wires are coming down," said Vanessa Baird-Streeter, a LIPA spokeswoman, of what's causing the new outages. "It also doesn't help with the weather we have been getting as far as restoring power."

The storm hit Long Island on Saturday morning, and brought destruction in dozens of areas with its heavy rains and hurricane force winds. Telephone lines and fences in the city were knocked down as winds reached as high as 50 mph.

Authorities said, however, that repairs are moving as fast as possible and they urge residents to remain patient. According to Baird-Streeter, LIPA brought in additional workers from Canada, Indiana and Pennsylvania to help with its restoration efforts on the Island.

City officials said they have also been working since Saturday to clear the streets, with many suffering from some flooding as well as fallen trees and branches. Anthony Tripp, chief of the Glen Cove Volunteer Fire Department, said fire officials responded to 14 calls for help after the storm hit the city.

"The biggest [challenge] was going onto Morgan Island to notify the residents in the flooded areas of Southland and Eastland drives that the water levels were receding and that the city stationed a bulldozer on the island in case of an emergency," Tripp said. "A shelter was also opened up in case we needed to evacuate the residents, but luckily, that didn't happen."

To report a power outage or to get more information about the status of repairs, LIPA customers can call 1-800-490-0075.
