Christoper Canty, 21, of Glen Cove was caught red-handed by Glen Cove officer Jason Grella while leaving the scene of a house burglary, according to a Glen Cove Police Department news release.

“Canty entered the house through a rear door while the occupants slept, and stole flat screen televisions, an iPad and the homeowner’s purse,” said the release. All stolen items were recovered by officer Grella when he stopped the man's car on Forest Avenue in Glen Cove while fleeing from the scene of the robbery.

After further investigation and questioning, Glen Cove detectives were able to connect the dots, leading to the closure of numerous prior residential burglaries in both Glen Cove and Matinecock.

Canty, who is six feet, two inches and 185 pounds, was “exceptionally silent for his size, often entering occupied houses in the middle of the night while the residents slept and making off with their valuables,” stated the release. Canty was known by both departments, and had been under close watch prior to his recent charge.

Old Brookville Police Chief Richard Smith commended the inter-agency cooperation and the outstanding police work of officer Jason Grella and Detectives Gerald Williams and Chris Grella.

“The Incorporated Village of Matinecock does not typically experience these types of crimes and by virtue of the efforts of both police departments' fine work, these crime victims will not only have an opportunity for legal retribution, but more importantly, a restoration of their quality of life,” said Chief Smith.

“This is just another example of our officers’ outstanding work, while also reflecting the need for such inter-agency intelligence sharing in modern pro-active policing,” said Glen Cove Police Chief William Whitton.

Canty was put on trial in First District Court Friday, Sept. 23, for numerous felony charges related to burglary, according to the release. Canty was already on parole for burglary.
