Police Make 50 DWI Arrests Over Holiday Weekend

County authorities continue their participation in state's drunk driving crackdown initiative.

Despite several warnings that were sent out to the public last week announcing that there will be increased DWI patrols during the Fourth of July weekend, Nassau County police announced Monday that 50 people were arrested for drunk driving from July 2 to 4.

The additional police presence, county officers said, was partially due to funding from the state's Stop DWI campaign. County authorities arrested 73 people for DWI in May after stepping up patrols on the roadways through the initiative during the Memorial Day weekend.

Although the latest campaign has ended, County Police Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey said his department will continue to aggressively arrest those who decide to drink and drive.
