Police Make 73 DWI Arrests Over Holiday Weekend

County authorities say their participation in state's Stop DWI initiative lead to dozens of drunk driving arrests from May 28 to June 1.

Despite several warnings that were sent out to the public last week announcing that there will be increased DWI patrols during Memorial Day weekend, Nassau County police revealed Tuesday that they still made 73 DWI arrests from May 28 and June 1.

This news comes after county officials announced on May 28 that they would be cracking down on drunk driving this Memorial Day weekend, with more officers on the roads in an effort to keep motorists and pedestrians safe. Local authorities view the holiday weekend as the start of the 100 deadliest days of the year.

A state Stop DWI grant, county officials explained, enabled police departments throughout the county to have a heightened police presence in their communities this past weekend. It is believed that the initiative helped to deter many but, county officials contended, it still wasn't enough considering that police made 65 DWI arrests last Memorial Day weekend.
