Propane Scare at PETCO

Glen Cove authorities still investigating incident.

The PETCO animal specialty retailer on Forest Avenue suffered a minor propane scare on March 13, which prompted Glen Cove fire officials to use a special kit to stop the propane from leaking. The incident is still under investigation.

After arriving to the store at around 1:30 p.m. that day, Anthony Tripp, chief of the Glen Cove Volunteer Fire Department, said that firefighters discovered that a forklift in the store was causing the propane gas to spread because it had a broken valve assembly. Fire officials then took the forklift outside to the store's rear parking lot and burned all of the propane out of its tank. No one was injured.

"The only way to get rid of the propane was to burn the valve off," Tripp explained. "The department has a special burn off kit designed to handle these types of situations. It takes about 20 minutes to burn all of the propane in a tank."
