Quick-Hitting Storm Smacks into the City

Sunday's brief downpour causes power failures and other damages in Glen Cove.

Although it was short-lived, Sunday's rainstorm still forced many Glen Cove residents to spend most of their afternoon cleaning up Mother Nature's mess.

According to the National Weather Service, the quick-hitting thunderstorm smacked into the city in the afternoon with winds as high as 60 mph, toppling many trees and power lines. City police officers said they responded to calls on several streets after some traffic lights went out and a few tree limbs fell on the roadways.

As of Monday morning, the Long Island Power Authority said that its crews are still working to restore power to 255 of its 11,385 customers in the city. Many of Glen Cove's outages, LIPA officials said, are on or near Forest Avenue, which is the city's busiest thoroughfare. About 5,600 LIPA customers in Nassau County are also still without electricity.
