Rainstorm Hammers Glen Cove

Gusty winds cause power outages in more than 300 homes in the city.

Saturday's rainstorm hit Glen Cove fiercely, with dozens of residents still experiencing power outages at their homes due to damages from the storm's gusty winds.

According to the National Weather Authority, the northeast winds reached as high as 50 mph since the storm began yesterday morning. As of 3:30 p.m. today, the Long Island Power Authority reported that there are still 345 locations in the city that do not have power. LIPA serves 11, 417 customers in Glen Cove.

In total, LIPA officials said, there are currently 8,634 power outages in locations within the Town of Oyster Bay area. Residents in Sea Cliff, Glen Head, Lattingtown and other areas near the city are also still reporting loss of power in their neighborhoods. Officials at LIPA's Storm Center said that yesterday's hurricane force winds and heavy rains interrupted service to roughly 241,000 customers on Long Island.

LIPA workers can now be seen on many streets around the city repairing downed power lines and taking other measures to restore electricity in homes. Workers have been able to restore power to 146,000 — or 60 percent — of LIPA's customers affected by the storm as of 3 p.m. today.

To prevent damages if a power spike occurs, LIPA's Storm Center representatives urge all residents who have outages to immediately disconnect appliances and all sensitive electronic equipment until their power is restored. To report a power outage or to get more information about the status of repairs, LIPA customers can call 1-800-490-0075.
