UPDATED: Storm Brings Down Wires in Glen Cove

Downed utility pole accompanied by flames, arcing Thursday night; sections of Highland and Walnut Roads closed as of this morning.

The "derecho" that passed over Glen Cove last night didn't do the kind of damage many were preparing for, but it did bring down a utility pole and power line in a show of fire and electrical arcing, according to resident Paul Meli.

"The downed utility line and pole caused spectacular fires and arcing last night before the power was apparently turned off," Meli said in an email. "We got our power back early this morning, but cable phone, TV and Internet service is still out."

Caution tape surrounded the scene Friday morning, with Highland Road closed between St. Andrews Lane and Francis Terrace as well as from the vicinity of Franklin Avenue.

Walnut Road was cordoned off from Town Path to Dosoris Lane.

Update: Walnut Road was opened in both directions as of 2:30 p.m. Highland Road is still closed between Walnut Road and Pearsall Avenue as  was on scene along with Verizon crews who were fixing the downed lines.

Editor's Note: An earlier version of this report stated that Glen Cove DPW crews were working on fixing downed power lines. Those crews were on scene to assist in the cleanup but did not fix the power lines themselves.
