Suozzi: Glen Cove Police Keeping Watch Near Sikh Temple

Mayor says city police are being extra vigilant following the attack in Wisconsin.

Glen Cove said city police are increasing patrols around in the wake of the Sunday.

Suozzi issued a statement Sunday night saying Glen Cove Police routinely patrol area houses of worship but are increasing patrols around the on Lattingtown Road.

"The Glen Cove Police Department already patrols all of our religious institutions but patrols have been increased with today's senseless violence in Oak Creek, Wisconsin," Suozzi said.

Although the Wisconsin shooting Sunday has shaken Long Island's Sikh community, there is no specific threat to any local gurdwaras, authorities said. Nassau Police also announced increased patrols around Sikh temples, including the in Plainview.

The motives of the Wisconsin shooter, who was killed in the rampage that left at least six others dead, is not yet clear.

As a survivor of the attacks on 9/11/01 I knew from day one due to my own service in a classified environment that rogue elements within our own government were complicit in the attacks. I have learned nothing since that day that would change my mind. If anything there is ample evidence which has been ignored, there has been no true investigation yet, and no justice or accountability for the real perpetrators who used the event as "a new Pearl Harbor" or perhaps more accurately a new Reichstag fire to unite our nation under a fascist mindset of fear & prejudicial hatred.
A month after 9/11 NYC's Sun employees returned to work and as I boarded the LIRR from Sea Cliff every morning usually there was a middle aged man there in a turban. One morning when there were not many people on the train he took pains to tell me that he was a Sikh, and it was clear from his unhappy demeanor that he was having to take some flak for his turban from people. I thanked him for his consideration and let him know that his faith was not a problem for me, nor would it have been even if he was Islamic. As an activist I got to meet Talat Hamdani, whose son Salman, an NYPD cadet, lost his life on 9/11 saving others. The Hamdanis are from Pakistan. Salman is a hero who did his job and did not discriminate who he should and should not have saved when he ran up those stairs. His heroic death in the line of duty is a symbol that America's diversity is and should remain part of our national spirit.
