A month after 9/11 NYC's Sun employees returned to work and as I boarded the LIRR from Sea Cliff every morning usually there was a middle aged man there in a turban. One morning when there were not many people on the train he took pains to tell me that he was a Sikh, and it was clear from his unhappy demeanor that he was having to take some flak for his turban from people. I thanked him for his consideration and let him know that his faith was not a problem for me, nor would it have been even if he was Islamic. As an activist I got to meet Talat Hamdani, whose son Salman, an NYPD cadet, lost his life on 9/11 saving others. The Hamdanis are from Pakistan. Salman is a hero who did his job and did not discriminate who he should and should not have saved when he ran up those stairs. His heroic death in the line of duty is a symbol that America's diversity is and should remain part of our national spirit.
