"Tony Jimenez, in my opinion, epitomizes the idea of what a volunteer should be," said Police Chief William Whitton. "It goes back many, many, many years. He volunteered for the military as soon as he graduated high school, in 1968, he hit the ground running into Vietnam, and he hasn't stopped. It's been case after case of him giving himself, and expecting nothing in return. That really captures the spirit of National Night Out."

Jimenez volunteers his time with the Glen Cove EMS, and SAFE, in addition to serving on the City Council, said Sgt. Chris Ortiz.

"Tony's an active participant in [which stands for Substance Abuse Free Environment]," Ortiz said. "It's a community organization that focuses on substance abuse prevention education, it's a really helpful organization."

Jimenez said it was an honor to be recognized by the city.

"I just go out and live my life," he said. "I don't think I step up more than anybody else would, given the opportunity."

Whitton noted public service was a matter of choice for the PBA's honoree, Mayor Ralph Suozzi.

"The mayor is a guy who could've had a wonderful career in the private sector," said Whitton. "But he really decided to dedicate himself to the community."

Suozzi, himself a former volunteer firefighter in Glen Cove, noted the collaborative effort among the community.

"We have wonderful first responders in our police department, our volunteer fire department, and EMS, our harbor master, or auxiliary police," said Suozzi. "Take the , for instance. You had all of these organizations working together, literally to save a human life."
