Authorities to Collect Unwanted and Expired Drugs

Nassau County and Glen Cove Police Department team up to help prevent teen drug abuse.

Nassau County Legislator Diane Yatauro (D-Glen Cove) recently made arrangements with Glen Cove Police Chief William Whitton to establish a program for the proper disposal of unused and expired prescription drugs. The program will be held on June 26 at the Glen Cove Police Department from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

"I encourage my neighbors to participate in this worthwhile program. Too often, children are tempted to experiment with medicines that are within easy reach in medicine cabinets and countertops," Yatauro said. "By bringing any unwanted or expired prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications, you will be protecting your children."

The initiative, county officials said, offers residents a safe and proper place to dispose of harmful drugs. Unused prescription pain medications, such as Vicodin and Oxycontin as well as many over-the-counter cold remedies are known to be gateways to teenage drug abuse.

"Not only does this program safeguard our children by offering residents the safe disposal of unwanted drugs, we are protecting our drinking water and area waterways from contamination," Yatauro said.
