City Delays Ferry Terminal Construction

Ferry terminal, Marine's homecoming and Ford Street Fire were hot topics at Tuesday's City Council meeting.

A resolution authorizing a time extension for the construction for the Glen Cove Ferry Terminal was adopted during Tuesday night's City Council Meeting.

, though the slated completion of the $11 million, federal stimulus funded project still remains for Fall 2011.

The delay is also associated with environmental permits being reviewed by the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), said Suozzi.

City Welcomes Home A Hero

Councilman Tony Jimenez praised the Glen Cove Fire Department, EMS, and Police Department for last week's .

"The Fire Departments put on a wonderful display, EMS too," Jimenez said. "It was a wonderful, symbolic celebration, this is how we should welcome home our returning heroes."

Illegal Housing and Ford Street Fire

, sent several residents to the hospital and .

"It could've been worse," said Jimenez. "The first responders put their lives on the line, and somebody owes their life to the work of our emergency services."

Mary Ralph Suozzi said that the illegally-occupied house proved to be a hazard to the community.

"This is why the city focuses much of its resources on illegal occupancy," said Suozzi. "There were two very young children – under a year or two old – living in a back-room apartment; and they were lucky to get out. This is the tragedy of illegal housing."

Suozzi said that there was also an illegally-occupied attic apartment.
