City Notebook: Councilman Jimenez Volunteers in Jamaica

This week's City of Glen Cove Notebook features Tony and Kathy Jimenez's humanitarian trip to Jamaica, Diane Yatauro's concerns over proposed redistricting plan and Senior Recognition Day.

Glen Cove City Councilman Tony Jimenez and his wife and Kathy recently traveled to Kingston, Jamaica to volunteer at the health clinic run by the Missionaries of the Poor group housed in a Catholic Brothers monastery.

Jimenez – an active former Chief of the Glen Cove Volunteer EMS Corps – and Kathy – a nurse – provided medical assistance to poor, ill and wounded residents of Kingston by cleaning and dressing wounds and assisting bed-ridden patients with daily tasks.

"We do a lot of volunteer work in Glen Cove and we also found it extremely rewarding and humbling to help others in a foreign country," said Jimenez.

Yatauro Voices Concerns on Redistricting

Nassau Democrats, including Minority Leader Diane Yatauro, D - Glen Cove,  are accusing the majority Republican party of manipulating current legislative boundaries — as required by law after every census is released — to hold on to power for the next decade.

However, Republican leadership says the legislature must act as soon as possible to ensure that county residents are fairly represented by their government.

The proposed map removes Glen Cove out of the 18th District and into the 16th District. As Nassau County Minority Leader Diane Yatauro , the new district will have no incumbent.

Yatauro says this proposed map is in violation of the law and breaks precedent.

"More than 500,000 Nassau County residents would be placed in new legislative districts if the map drawn by the Republicans is allowed to be implemented this year," Yatauro said in an op-ed. "This map is both illegal and premature. It dismembers Democratic districts, even placing several incumbents in the same district while bolstering the numbers for Republican incumbents. It flies in the face of the federal Voting Rights Act. Presiding Officer Peter Schmitt's self-serving and illegal actions will make a legal challenge imperative."
