City Notebook: New Italian Restaurant Proposed

A new restaurant has been proposed at 58 Landing Road, and updated visual simulation was presented at the Planning Board Thursday.

Michael and Helen Hoffman proposed an Italian restaurant at 58 Landing Road, which currently stands vacant, during Thursday's Planning Board meeting.

The Hoffman family say bringing a restaurant to the site – which was once occupied by Aqua Lounge – will benefit the area.

"It's better than what was there," said Michael. "I heard there's been strippers, hookers, the place was shady. We want to bring something good in to the community."

While parking poses the biggest challenge for the project, the Hoffmans said they will seek to rent space from nearby lots.

Planning Board member Herbert Kaufman pointed out the abundance of Italian restaurants currently operating in Glen Cove and asked the Hoffmans what their proposed establishment will bring to the city?

"The city of Glen Cove has a rich history of Italian culture, and excellent Italian food," Kaufman said. "Being married to an Italian woman, I know it's all about the gravy."

"The gravy will be excellent," Michael said.

Updated Visual Simulation

Representatives of Glen Cove Village Square LLC presented the Planning Board with a new, updated, visual simulation of during Thursday's meeting.

The Piazza is a $60 million dollar development project that is expected to bring commercial use at street level, and four stories atop for residential and college dorm-like use.

One main topic was discussed during Thursday's meeting: parking.

John Canning of VHB said that there would be approximately 175 spots needed, and around 106 on the GCVS LLC property.

Canning said that one proposal included the use of the Brewster Street Garages, which are next door, and the city would be paid a fee.

Canning said that library parking would not be effected if parking laws are correctly enforced.
