Cuomo: One Million Apply for STAR Exemption

The new registration system was set up to cut down on double dipping.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said that more than one million homeowners in the state have applied for the STAR exemption in the last six weeks.

Although the state has offered the school tax break for years, New York's Department of Taxation and Finance last year found that thousands of individuals with multiple properties were receiving more than one STAR exemption.

The new registration is designed to stop that practice.

The governor's office said more than 90 percent of those who have registered completed their registration on the Tax Department’s website: www.tax.ny.gov

Homeowners with annual incomes under $500,000 can register at www.tax.ny.gov or they can call 518-457-2036.

The registration deadline is Dec. 31.
