City Honors Youth Board Director

This week's City Notebook features Youth Board award, CSEA union and a special council meeting.

City honors Youth Board Director

Arlene O’Dell was honored for her work as the executive director of the Glen Cove City Youth Board. The city presented her with a plaque at Tuesday night's meeting, as she has served over 350 young people in daily programs including after-school activities, recreation, teen leadership, youth employment, teen parenting and family service programs.

Nassau County Legislature Diane Yatauro, D-Glen Cove, also presents O'Dell with an honorary plaque, recognizing her as "a true Trailblazer," during the Nassau County Legislature’s annual Women‘s History Month award ceremonies on March 21.

CSEA union members protested outside before and during Tuesday's City Council Meeting.

The demand for respect was high, as members said they were unhappy that they have not yet received a fair contract in 15 months.

"I believe this could all get worked out," said Glen Cove CSEA Vice President Kevin Monahan. "Look at the men and women here tonight. We're the heart of the city of Glen Cove. We had an agreement, but then we go to negotiations and I feel like we got kicked in the teeth. [Addressing Mayor Suozzi] You were in the negotiations in the beginning, and the next thing I know, an attorney was hired for $40,000 to negotitate with peanuts, yet other contracts were signed by you, the mayor."

Mayor Ralph Suozzi  said that the city is not at fault for any violations: "It's not like we're trying to crush the union. We come to the table; we set ground rules, which we did. Some side violated, not the city."
