DWI Initiative, Haber Keeps After Suozzi on 'Debate Ducking'

Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano and Nassau County Police Commissioner Thomas V. Dale announced that the NCPD will participate in a “STOP-DWI” grant that will allocate additional police officers to conduct an extensive DWI enforcement initiative.

The NCPD’s Highway Patrol Bureau will coordinate and plan a DWI saturation  enforcement strategy targeting areas throughout Nassau County.

Haber Says Suozzi is ‘Ducking’ Debates

Democrat Adam Haber called out Tom Suozzi Thursday morning for “ducking” debates Haber had challenged the former county executive to.

At a press conference held in Haber for Nassau Headquarters in Freeport, Haber announced the launch of SuozziDebateDuck.com and handed out rubber ducks to highlight what he referred to as Suozzi’s “debate ducking.”

“These debates are an opportunity to move beyond scripted 30 second ads and really learn who the candidates are, while asking for their votes,” Haber said in a release.

Sandy Workers Compensated for Owed Money

New York State Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman this week announced the resolution of an investigation into the underpayment of more than 100 workers performing emergency post-storm reconstruction work in several stores owned by national retailers, including Michaels Stores, Inc. and Staples the Office Superstore, LLC, in New York City and Nassau County.

Under an agreement with the attorney general, the emergency restoration contractor, InStar Services Group LP, has paid back wages and per diems totaling $65,000 for workers on the projects.

Shortly after Hurricane Sandy, InStar Services Group, LP, subcontracted with a recruiter to hire employees for post-Sandy emergency reconstruction  work.

The employees, some of whom came from the Rochester area and some from out of state, worked several days of 12-hour shifts. Despite the hours, Schneiderman said some were paid nothing at all, while others received only a fraction of what they were owed.

Jury Finds Nassau Did Not Violate County Employee's Civil Rights

A Farmingdale man who accused Nassau County of violating his civil rights has lost his case in federal court.

Willie Warren, 47, of Farmingdale, a former equipment operator, claimed the county had discriminated against him at his job because he is black. A jury in Brooklyn federal court ruled against him Friday, throwing out his multimillion dollar lawsuitNewsday reported.

Massapequa Resident Named to Humane Law Enforcement Post

A Massapequa resident and longtime animal advocate has been named to a post with Nassau County.

Gary Rogers, has been tabbed to be the county's Coordinator for prevention of cruelty to animals.

Rogers was one of the founders of the Suffolk County SPCA and has been a spokesman for the Nassau SPCA.
